I thought I'd get the ball rolling with a topic to discuss.
How did you find out about Lolita? When did you start wearing the fashion?

Hello everyone,
I'm going to be honest and say that I'm still new to physically dressing in Lolita. I first found out about Lolita by randomly searching Japanese website after watching Rozen Maiden when I was fifteen. I found Mary Magdalene and fell in love with Lolita. For a few years I followed the Lolita community but I wasn't actually apart of it until recently, I mostly stayed on the sidelines. Eventually I went on google and learned a lot from several websites and the GLB, I joined a community on Facebook and LiveJournal and started buying the basics at the start of this year.

Mary Magdalene was the brand that I fell in love with first too! It was so sophisticated. At that time I absolutely hated sweet, which I find so funny looking back, as that's now my primary style.
I found out about it when I was about ten, and I was obsessed with dress up games online. The lace monster "goth lolis" really caught my eye, so I looked into it more and fell in love, it was ages after that that I actually started buying/wearing lolita.

That was my exact thought when I first saw the site, I remember mass saving their pictures because I had no idea on how to purchase them. Every time I looked at those pictures I would have a warm and fuzzy feeling all over.

I'm not quite sure, actually! I think it was through the whole anime/general japanese culture phase, but I think the first time I was actually aware of lolita in a more practical sense was way back when B&N carried FRUiTS and GothLoli Bibles. I bought the english versions religiously (ha) but looking back they seem super out dated!

I had a lot of friends that were into anime, and I think one of them showed me a dress on ebay. Stolen pictures from brands, but I didn't know that. I fell in love, but had to forget about it because I was fourteen years old and my family wasn't exactly the wealthiest.
A few years later, I found it again when I was in high school. I discovered while some of the dresses I loved were cosplayish, for the most part the old dresses I loved were stolen photos from old school Baby, AP, and funny enough, Mary Magdalene! (I'm starting to sense a trend!! I started buying and wearing lolita the summer after I graduated, but I didn't really start heavily taking part of the fashion until two years later.

By the time I got really into lolita they were already out of print and were being scalped like crazy.

I don't remember how I first discovered lolita, but I think it was when I saw a girl wearing it back in 2005. She was hosting a panel at a college-run con and had some GLBs too. That summer, I went to Japan, and I bought a couple lace monsters while there. (The other two girls I was with didn't like the style, so I didn't shop around like I should have. I was in Harajuku at that, so it totally kills me when I look back.) I knew about BABY from Kamikaze Girls, but I discovered other brands when I got into college and started hanging out with other girls who liked the style. I love some of AP's older things. I remember looking at them in the English GLBs and loving them. Glitter Trump skirt in sax was my first brand piece.

I became aware of it at some point during 2002-2004 through anime conventions and cosplay. I'd seen people wearing it at conventions and I remember looking into it a little, but at the time, it didn't really appeal to me much. I loosely followed it over the years. I remember back in 2006-2008 or so, looking at different brand websites (Baby, AP, IW) and getting sticker-shock, and disappointment because nothing would fit me at the time. Fast forward to 2012, I was getting bored with cosplay and I wanted something to dress up in at conventions. I found a girl selling a replica dress with a cute print and some shoes for $50 in my size at a swap meet sort of deal that was going on at the convention. I ended up getting it and put together my first coord. It all kind of went downhill from there. I just regret not having gotten into it earlier. But at the same time, I was a lot heavier, I didn't have the money to fund it and I lived with heavy smokers so it sort of works out now.

Just the usual "my friend showed me some photos of it and then I fell in love" story.
Our early attempts (that friend and I) were...interesting to say the least, hahah. This was back in '06 or so though, and there weren't as many resources for newbies. I had no idea there were so many lolitas overseas, and I'd never been on EGL or Livejournal. When I went to '07 PMX I was shocked. Not only were there tons of lolitas, but they were wearing Japanese brand clothing and that was mind-blowing because barely any shops shipped internationally at that point.

My mother used to teach at an English school in Japan, but when I was born she moved back to the US. The ladies she was friends with back then had daughters of their own around my age and when we were older I used to be penpals with them. While talking to them they told be about various things so I've been interested in Japanese culture, Japanese fashions, and various other things from Japan since I was younger. Even though I couldn't actually afford buy anything until recently I've ogled over the lolita fashion since I was a kid.

This is kind of difficult for me to pin down, because I've been a fan of J-fashions (among other things) for quite some time, since high school (8+ years ago). I can't honestly remember my first exposure to the fashion, because I feel like I've been aware of it for a while, but it never seemed like something I could practically get into, since a lot of my interests I tend to hide from everyone but those absolutely closest to me (such as my husband). However, my decision to get into it was when I was re-exposed to the fashion via some tumblr (I know, I know) post early this year. I decided hell, I'm not getting any younger, may as well rock it while I can, found my local comm, joined, and have been lurking /cgl/ and livejournal ever since.

I was a little obsessed with Mana when I was 15, (2005) I have a friend who had lived in Japan for a while who introduced me to the GLBs and I was really into trad goth at the time. I finally got out of dressing in all black when I was about 21. Over the past year or so, I've become reacquainted with Lolita fashion because I moved to a new city and spent more time online. I've finally started to develop a workable wardrobe, despite it being all BL and F+F. I'm probably going to pick up some brand pieces next time I go to California, I'd love something in a solid color from AP, and a lavender bag. My wardrobe is currently 50-50 sweet/gothic, but I'd never combine the two into one coord.

I'm pretty new too! I lurked a ton before diving into lolita at the beginning of the year. I think I found out about lolita thru a jpop /jrock panel at a local anime convention several years ago where they showed Malice Mizer as an example. Cue looking at Mana and going through the internet to find out about lolita. It was the time of old school and thinking Bodyline was past my budget. Fast forward to last year and tumblr got me interested in it again.

My friend brought the FRUiTS book to class one day and I was mesmerized! I tried searching for the brands listed there but "MILK" and "Pretty" didn't bring up many fashion related results so it took a while to find what I was looking for.
