I'm sure we all have stories of wearing Lolita in public, both the good and the bad. I'd love to hear some of the reactions people have given you if you've ever worn Lolita to school, work, or just around town.
I have gotten good reactions to wearing Lolita publicly. Having some random person come up to you and call you cute or pretty really makes my day. The worst I've ever really been asked is the old, "Are you in a play?" I've also been asked if I was an Irish step dancer. I've been called Little Miss Muffet and Alice by people I know, but that's about the worst.
I'm hoping that you guys have some more entertaining tales than I do. :3

Irish step dancer eh? That's a new one!! I get the "are you in a play" one a lot as well, but I don't think of it as negative but just inquisitive. People just don't know what else could possibly possess someone to dress so against the grain, I think.
I get tons and tons of compliments... my favorite being a couple of people who told me that it gives them confidence to see me so confident even when wearing something that ostracizes me to an extent. I had my first more rude people very recently during a meetup, which was very strange.
They asked why we were dressed the way we were. I said my typical "this is just the way we dress!" and she was like "no, you don't" and I was like "yes, we do." Her response was "There's no way you actually wear that, every day?" And another girl is chiming in at this point because it's so absurd; "Yes, actually we do. Every day." And she just sort of scoffed and left.
Is it -REALLY- that unusual, lady? Jesus it's just a poofy dress!!

I hardly ever receive negative attention and usually hear compliments, sometimes the 'are you in a play' questions.
But there is one story I have where someone was trying to be snide. I was with a group in the bookstore and we were standing near the children's aisle when this lady came up to us to ask our opinion on what book she should get. She told us since we were dressed like children perhaps we could recommend a book for her son. She came off more akward than rude so she didn't get the response she was hoping for.
Instead one of the girls who was studying to be a teacher stepped in and killed her with kindness while suggesting books appropriate for her son's age group.
It was too funny to see her squirm when her attempts to put us down were met with politeness lol.

I'm not a daily lolita, but I've been wearing it out more recently due to good weather and my decision to enjoy my hobbies more.
Wednesday, the hostess at the restaurant my mom and I went to for lunch really loved my outfit. She mentioned it when we came in and again when we were leaving saying, "You look so fashionable, like you're ready to go to New York!" This surprised me, since I don't consider toned down, older IW to be particularly in vogue, but it looked nice.
Saturday, I wanted to buy some material to make hair accessories for my St. Mephisto's Cathedral skirt in iris (That color feels nearly impossible to match!), so I wore it to town that day. I got a lot of compliments, and a shopkeeper that I talk to a lot even wrote the name of the brand in her phone to look up later. A girl at the farmer's market came up to tell me that she really loved my outfit and really likes my style whenever she sees me. I was really flattered, though I can't remember what else she might have seen me wear, since I don't wear lolita around a lot. Unfortunately, I didn't find anything that matched my skirt perfectly, but I got a few things to try.
I think the very best weird comment that I've gotten was, "Are you dressed up like Helen Keller?" I'm legally blind and had my cane with me. I said no and that I really was legally blind and was just wearing some stuff from Japanese street fashion brands. The guy was super embarrassed, but my comm and I were more amused than anything. Along the same lines, I've been asked at a con if I was, "One of the three lolita blind mice." (Some people at cons have no idea what to make of my cane no matter what I'm wearing. It has never bothered me, since I'm pretty chill about it.)

I like when people compliment a specific aspect of your outfit, because then it feels like they genuinely like it. I feel like I get, "Oh, I like your dress," from people who are confused as to how to react, whereas when I get, "I like the pattern of your socks!" or "The fabric of your skirt is so nice!" it seems like they're actually paying attention to the outfit rather than daunted by how weird you look.
Good: Walking around in a big group of lolitas and only encountering positive comments. Weird: Being hit on by middle schoolers on the bus who tried to impress me with their Aeropostle sweats. Worst: Public masturbation plus intense staring while I was waiting for a bus with my friend. :C

I think the best reaction in public would either have to be the one time a woman actually recognized the fashion when I was grocery shopping in frills (her daughter wears lolita too) or maybe the time on the previous International Lolita day when we had about 15~ lolitas walking on a sidewalk in a line, and a man across the street (a very busy one) yelled out to us "You girls are beautiful, this day was made for you!!" haha

The other day I was wearing my Meta Moonlight Night skirt out and dressed in gothic while going thrift shopping. I've gone out in sweet and classic previously to the same thrift store. While I was checking out the cashier had black streaks in blonde hair and a big dread lock, and then some crazy eye makeup (which I thought was cool, but not so keen on the dreadlock since it looked kinda icky) At any rate, she was giving me this evil stare-down, like I was suddenly stranger looking than her and therefore more intimidating. It was so weird.
I've gotten a lot of positive comments, like "I really like your dress" and I've had random people run up and compliment me. Lots of random stares and lots of picture taking. On the way home from Otakon we stopped for lunch at a Taco Bell and I kept my outfit on since I filled up all my space in my luggage with stuff I bought and no room for my two huge pettis. I'm walking back to the car and this guy gets all up in my path whipping out is phone to take pictures.
I seriously wonder what people do with these pictures. Post them to facebook? I'm waiting for me looking all derpfaced and spacey to show up on poorly dressed or something. At least ask. I'll pose for you to mock me on your facebook.

I'm a daily lolita, so I wear it to both places I work and school, in addition to any meets/cons. I don't usually have people sneaking pictures when I'm alone, but they tend to a lot when I'm in a group and we're all dressed up. I've had a few people come up and ask for a picture at work and such though.
I get a lot of "What are you dressed up for?" questions, so I basically just answer that it's a Japanese street fashion because it's the quickest and easiest explanation. It's weird when they ask me at work though, since I run the register and it's a bit obvious that I'm dressed up for work. Someone did ask me if I dressed like that for work voluntarily though. One of the weirdest approaches was after a meet, some lady and her husband drove up to us in a parking lot and was all, "I like your outfits. So is this a little girl thing or a slut thing?" And then proceeded to say "No offense!" When we gave her baffled looks. I was more concerned about why she was associating the two, haha. I've gotten some lewd comments too. ("Hey Alice! Where's your rabbit hole?") and people asking if I was from another country like Germany or England. And then the typical Alice in Wonderland/Little Bo Peep/Anime Character/Halloween costume stuff. People can get rude a lot, I swear I've flipped more people off in lolita than I ever have in normal clothes.
Of course I get postive comments too. Lots of elderly men and ladies compliment me, and little girls too (The princess question never gets old.) I walked into Sephora one day and one of the girls working there got excited and even knew which brand I was wearing! And at Buffalo Exchange, I've had them ask for a photo to put on their style blog, and I had also been approached by a woman there complimenting my coordinate and asking what site would be a good place for her daughter to sell her MMM. Her daughter wasn't a part of the local comm though so I had no idea who she was. I've also ran into another girl wearing lolita who I didn't know at the time just walking around town. We both waved excitedly at each other, and later ended up becoming friends.

OHH MY GOD HELEN KELLER!?? How awkward and rude to ask!! Why on earth would someone ask that!? I...I don't even know. I really wasn't sure what to think. She was born in 1880, so I guess some of her clothes could have been styles that lolita has borrowed from over the years, but I was wearing a sax BABY JSK and not some lovely, toned down VM or MM. Blind cane + poofy dress = Helen Keller costume. Being asked if I'm dressed up as a well-known figure who advocated for rights of the disabled is sure better than the Little Bo Peep comments imo, even if it was super weird. A woman yesterday only got out the, "Are you dressed as little-" before I started with my explanation that it was a street fashion based off of Victorian and Rococo fashion. Weird: Being hit on by middle schoolers on the bus who tried to impress me with their Aeropostle sweats. Worst: Public masturbation plus intense staring while I was waiting for a bus with my friend. :C Lol. That must have been odd and somewhat amusing to see those kids act like that. I'm sorry you had to deal with that. Did you end up reporting him?

Since we were waiting for the bus, it was a situation where we weren't there for a long time, so it was a matter of waiting it out until it arrived, haha.

The best reaction I ever got was when my comm went out for brunch once. I was just coming out of the bathroom, and I almost ran right into a little girl dressed in bright colors and wearing rainbow tutu as I opened the door. Her eyes got so big and bright when she saw me. Her mom was with her, so I apologized for almost running into them and excused myself before heading back to the table. Her mom was really all smiles the entire time, which was a welcome change from the usual judging stares. After I got back to the table, I kept catching glimpses the little girl staring at me and the rest of my comm throughout the meal. I'd wave to her or smile and she'd look away shyly, but I could tell she really liked our outfits. Later, my comm started went over to the sitting area and started taking photos, like we do at most meetups. Her mom brought her over by us and they watched us take pictures from afar. Her mom seemed really cool. I really regret not asking if she wanted to take pictures with us.

"Are you amish" is really weird because do they even wear pastel colors / prints?
Also "is that the same outfit you wore last week" is infuriating because I am wearing a pink skirt with a white blouse and last week I wore a blue dress.
I feel like people react a lot less since I've been in college, but maybe I just don't notice as much now.
